FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS
How
do coated strings work?
All
coated strings work on the principal of protecting
the metal strings
from oxidation. Oxidation is
caused by air
and moisture. And acid and salts in sweat accelerate the oxidation.
Basically
there are two main types of protective coating.
The
first type is based on a polymer (plastic)
material which forms a physical barrier to moisture, air and
corrosive sweat. This type is a relatively thick coating that tends
to dampen the tone of the strings and may give a waxy feel to them.
After extended play the polymer material can fray rendering the
strings unplayable. Polymer coated strings are generally losing popularity.
The
second type is based on coating the strings
with a material that chemically bonds with the metal surface of the
string. This substance makes the string moisture repellant. Coatings
of this type are very thin and are sometimes referred to as a
nanoweb, ultra thin or micro coatings. Because the coating is very
thin the tone and feel of strings coated in this way are not
discernably different from 'normal' strings.
Which
are the most common brands of coated strings?
D'Addario
EXP and Elixir are probably the two best known brands.
Can
I coat strings myself?
In
a word - YES ! Not too many string companies are likely to let you
into the secret but a new technology breakthrough lets you do it
yourself on your favourite strings. STRINGLIFE the liquid string
protectant chemically bonds with the metal of your strings and
protects them from all the sweat and acids from your hands. Many
products simply coat your strings and lubricate them but they do
little to protect them. STRINGLIFE really is different - it does what
it says on the bottle.
How
do you apply STRINGLIFE ?
It
could not be easier. The bottle has a sponge applicator on it. You
simply rub the applicator on to the strings and let it dry. It will
not harm your fingerboard. We recommend you apply it after playing.
Simply rub down your strings - don't forget the back of them - and
apply a protective coating of STRINGLIFE. Your guitar is ready to
play the next time you pick it up and the strings have been protected
in the meantime.
What
is it?
It
is a solution of an advanced polymer that molecularly bonds to your
strings helping to seal the surface from the sweat and finger acid
that corrodes them. When applied to your strings, nut and frets it
can also reduce string breakage by reducing friction.
What
our customers say.
"
I'm actually super-critical of the equipment I use for music but I
can only think of positive things to say about Stringlife. Before I
tried it I was becoming very fed-up with my acid sweat. I had even
considered changing to nylon strings. But Stringlife really works.
It's the best product for string protection I've ever used. I
wouldn't be without it." Paul Conway, Exmouth.
