A ukulele's tone and volume depends on its size and construction. Ukuleles have 4 strings, nylon being the most commonly used.
Ukuleles come in four sizes: soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone. The soprano or "standard" is the smallest, and is the original size ukulele. If you have a ukulele and you are not sure what type it is you can measure the scale length.
Soprano 33cm :: Concert 38cm :: Tenor 43cm :: Baritone 48cm

Common Ukulele Tunings:
Soprano A4-D4-F#4-B4 or G4-C4-E4-A4 (Goats Can Eat Anything)
Concert G4-C4-E4-A4 or G3-C4-E4-A4
Tenor G3-C4-E4-A4, G4-C4-E4-A4 , or D4-G3-B3-E4
Baritone D3-G3-B3-E4
